Abstract
One of the outstanding figures bestowed by Azerbaijan upon world culture, Khaqani Shirvani (1126-1199), occupies an important place in the literature of the peoples of the Near and Middle East with his rich literary heritage as a master of powerful poetic expression. The study of his work remains one of the issues in Azerbaijani literary scholarship that continues to preserve its relevance to this day. It should be noted that, until now, the works of Khaqani Shirvani have not been comprehensively and extensively studied in Azerbaijan, and a complete critical edition of his works has not yet been prepared. As the first initiatives in this direction, one may mention the monograph Khaqani Shirvani (On His Life and Works) published in 1954 by the prominent orientalist scholar Mammadagha Sultanov (1910-1991), as well as the work Khaqani Shirvani (His Life, Era and Environment) by the Khaqani scholar Qafar Kandli-Herisci (1923-1997). In recent years, the orientalist scholar Elnara Zeynalova has also been engaged in the study of Khaqani’s heritage. In 2024 she published the monograph In the Footsteps of Khaqani Shirvani’s Arabic Qasidas, thereby contributing to filling an existing gap in this field. The author’s discussion of various aspects of Khaqani’s life and work о, as well as her attempt to clarify several controversial issues, constitute some of the positive aspects of the monograph. One of the noteworthy points in the monograph is the author’s discussion of the debated issue concerning the title of one of Khaqani Shirvani’s most important qasidas, Mirʾat al-Safa (“The Mirror of Purity”), and her conclusion that the original title of the qasida is in fact Shiniyya. In the present review article, the sources related to this issue are examined, arguments are brought forward, and an attempt is made to clarify the matter.
