Robert Hillenbrand (August 2, 1941) is a British scholar who is one of the oldest scholars of Islamic fine arts and has made very important research in this field. He conducted research at the Universities of Edinburgh, St. Andrews, and Cambridge in Britain, and at the same time, he is one of the great scholars who has made contributions to the entire Western scientific world and Western Orientalism. Hillenbrand is one of the experts who has shaped scientific thought in this field. That is why we thought it would be useful to translate Hillenbrand’s article, which is included in the British Library collection, with the intention of making Azerbaijani scholars aware of his works. I must note that I do not agree with some of the views of the scholar who presented the analysis of the Shahnameh. He is less distinguished from scholars who distance the history of Iran from the Turks and make it “Persian”. Likewise, a scholar who did not hesitate to declare the dynasty of Amir Temur as “Mongol”, and whose views should not be accepted unambiguously in the Azerbaijani scientific community because he spoke from this aspect. However, at the same time, I believe that it is necessary to get to know scholars working in Western oriental studies and have scientific communication with them.
