Abstract
One of the most popular stories in written literature “Leyli and Majnun”, has a long history and its origins is objects of scientific interests of Eastern and Western oriental studies. It can be said with some courage that the first form of the story “Leyli and Majnun” was formed in three periods: period of paganism, Christianity (preislamic) period and period of Islam. Although we don’t have detailed information about the epic in written literature the first and perfect example of this masnavi was written by the great Azerbaijani poet Nizami in 1188 by order of ruler from Shirvanshah dynasty Ahsitan ibn Manuchehr. The structure of composition Nizami’s “Leyli and Majnun” raises the question in itself: what story of Leyli and Majnun existed before him did Nizami use? There are a number of contradic-tionary hypothesizes on this problem and it’s impossible to touch upon all versions in one article. That’s why we will focus on the most important of these versions in this article. In this study, we will try to prove that the plot of the poem was first mentioned in cuneiform writing of Ancient Babylon then passed to Azerbaijan and after assimilation was reflected in folklore.
